My thoughts on traveling after terrorism in Paris

I wrote these comments responding to a post on my favorite travel groups on Facebook. I know after any terrorist attack, there is a fear of travel, especially when terrorism hits one of the most travelled to cities in the world. It is okay to be scarred and cautious. But in the words of Rick Steves “Don’t Be Terrorized.”

The first time I did a solo backpacking trip in was 2005 and I was traveling about Europe for three months. My first destination was London and I arrived on July 6th. I can remember how excited I was to start my trip as I got on a commuter train the morning of the 7th. I was on a commuter train when the terrorist attacks happened and was stuck in Central London for hours because they shut down public transportation. I wanted to go home after that. I saw things I will never forget that day and really thought about cancelling my trip. Instead, I changed it a bit. Went to Oxford, Bath and then returned to London. I had a wonderful three months in Europe and that trip started my love affair with solo travel. So go. Even go to Paris if you want. London really was fine after the attacks and I am sure Paris will be as well.

Be smart, be wise, and continue traveling.

This photo really expresses how I feel right now. The Eiffel Tower is a shadow as we focus on other things, grief and safety. But it will be back, so keep traveling.
