I love going to Florida in the winter. It is warm, the beaches are beautiful and there is plenty of things to do. But sometimes Florida feels flashy and crowded. The beautiful nature loses its luster with late night bars, giant high rise hotels and condos and people trying to out dress each other. Sanibel Island is close to those places such as Fort Myers Beach or Naples, but is nothing like them. What makes Sanibel Island special is it is a great combination of an untouched island with a beautiful beach vacation. It does not have any of the chains that you might find in the other places, you won’t find a Hooters, head to Fort Myers Beach for that, but you will find class and a laid back feeling so close to other locations.
Sanibel has some of the most beautiful beaches, Bowman’s Beach is a favorite. It is towards the end of the island, there are no hotels on the beach and parking is set back from the beach so there is no car noise. This is a great place to enjoy the day.
Sanibel is famous for its shelling. There are 250 different types of shells and you can either casually pick up a shell, or get really serious about it and buy a shovel and a net.
It is also a great place to watch birds as 230 birds come through Sanibel. There are several nature reserves or you can sit back and relax at the beach and watch them fly by.
If you are interested in fishing, there is a fishing pier down at the other side by the lighthouse. There is also a great beach, wildlife, the historic lighthouse and many local restaurants on that side.
If you are crazy excitement and lots of nightlife, then Sanibel Island is not your place, but if you want to relax, enjoy beautiful beaches and nature, the Sanibel Island is the perfect place and is the Florida I fell in love with.
